Tax residency in Uruguay
An individual is considered a tax resident of Uruguay for a calendar year if any of the following conditions is met: the person is physically present in Uruguay for more than 183 days during that calendar year; the person’s center of vital interests is in Uruguay, which is presumed when the individual’s spouse and minor dependent children habitually reside in Uruguay; or the person’s principal base or center of economic interests or activities is in Uruguay, which may be presumed, subject to rebuttal, if the individual makes a real estate investment in Uruguay meeting monetary thresholds set by regulation together with effective physical presence of at least 60 days in the year, or if the individual makes a qualifying investment in a Uruguayan enterprise meeting regulatory thresholds that directly creates at least 15 new full-time jobs. These presumptions are rebuttable with evidence that the individual’s center of vital or economic interests is located abroad.
