Tax residency in Antarctica
Antarctica is not a sovereign jurisdiction and has no personal income tax or statutory concept of individual tax residency; accordingly, there are no day-count thresholds or residence tests (such as permanent home, center of vital interests, habitual abode, or domicile) for becoming a tax resident of Antarctica, and mere presence there—whether as scientific personnel, support staff, tourist, or ship or aircraft crew—does not create tax residency in Antarctica or in the state operating an Antarctic facility or the flag state of a vessel. Individual tax residency for such persons remains determined solely under the domestic rules of the relevant state(s), with any dual residence resolved, where applicable, under tax treaty tie-breaker criteria. This statement does not extend to sub-Antarctic or nationally administered claimed territories, which follow the residency rules of the administering state.
