Tax residency in Hungary
An individual is resident in Hungary for personal income tax purposes if, in the calendar year, they are a Hungarian citizen (subject to any applicable tax treaty deeming residence elsewhere); have a permanent home available only in Hungary; or—if a permanent home exists in more than one country or in none—their centre of vital interests (personal and economic ties) is in Hungary; if the centre of vital interests cannot be determined, residence is based on habitual abode and an individual is regarded as habitually resident in Hungary if present for at least 183 days in the calendar year. In addition, an EU/EEA citizen who spends at least 183 days in Hungary in the year, and a non‑EU national holding Hungarian settlement/permanent residence status, are treated as resident. Where dual residence arises, the applicable double tax treaty tie‑breaker rules apply.
